최근 몇 년 사이 내게 가장 강렬한 인상을 준 사진가중 한 명이 바로 이호도이다. 그가 만들어내는 단순하면서 고요하고도 명상적인 이미지들은 관객들을 개인적이며 은밀한 그만의 세계로 조용히 끌어들인다. 언뜻 보면 그의 작업들은 단절과 외로움에 대한 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 한 걸음 가까이 다가가 살펴보면, 그것이 결국 연결과 소통에 대한 직접적 표현의 시도라는 것을 알 수 있다. 그는 일반적인 맥락에서 무시되어 버리거나 감지하기 힘든 이미지 요소들을 결합시켜 극적인 구성으로 끌어 올리고 있으며. 그 결과를 통해 이호도는 관객들이 이미지에 다가와 작고 미묘한 요소들을 통해 표현된 그의 주제와 공감할 수 있는가를 묻고 있다.
거대한 빌딩들 사이의 작은 비행기나 텅 비어있는 광활한 하늘 속 작은 새, 또는 너무 멀리 있어 그 형태만 간신히 알아볼 수 있는 가로등과 같은 오브제들은 작가가 만들어내는 풍경 안에서 쉽게 눈에 띄지는 않는다. 하지만 관객들은 이런 미묘한 시각적 요소들이 만들어내는 뉘앙스를 발견하고는 놀라게 되며, 작가가 만들어낸 세계에 동참하게 된다. 그리고 작가의 선택에 의해 극단적인 톤으로 만들어진 인화물들은 작품을 통해 얻을 수 있는 관객들의 경험을 보다 농밀한 수준으로 끌어 올린다. 때때로 이러한 세밀한 묘사들은 깊은 그림자 속에, 혹은 강한 빛 속에 잘 감추어져 있어, 이들을 발견하는 것 자체가 특별한 명상이 된다.
그가 만들어낸 각각의 이미지들은 그가 목격하고 경험했던 신비롭고도 밀도 깊은 경험을 담아내고 있다. 결국 작가가 자신의 시각 위에서 조합해낸 이러한 이미지들은, 작가 스스로가 그를 둘러싼 세상과의 관계를 더욱 심화시켜가는 것에 대한 깊고 의미 있는 통찰을 보여주고 있다.
Hodo is one of the strongest photographers I have seen in many years. While his images are quiet, meditative and simple, he asks of his viewers a participation in a private and personal landscape. Initially his work makes an impression of isolation and loneliness, but upon closer inspection actually deal directly with connection and relationships. Hodo asks the viewer to participate in his images – to find the subtle elements that are the true subjects in his work. He elevates subjects that the rest of the world neglects through their context with the rest of the image, or by drawing a relationship between other more subtle details.
Delicate visual elements are almost lost in the vision of Hodo’s landscapes: a minuscule plane in the middle of the intersection between large buildings; a bird, tiny in the vast, blank sky; a barely visible electrical pole stands alone in the distance. The viewer is drawn into his world to find these nuances and surprises, and he takes us to a richer level with this experience by printing them in extreme tones. Often times these details are
printed so dark or so light that we can just make them out, forcing us further into this special meditation.
Each image, through the way it is seen and the way he articulates the print, holds a special mystery and a rich experience. Seeing a group of images that build on Hodo’s vision offer deep and meaningful insight into his profound relationship with the world around him.
